Netflix has dropped a casting announcement for Season 2 of the flashy science fiction thriller Altered Carbon, and I’m pleased to see a couple of the returning characters.
In the world of Altered Carbon, people have a small disc inserted in the back of the neck that houses the person’s memories and personality. These discs, also referred to as stacks, can be transferred to other bodies (sleeves) when a person dies.
Due to these rules, I had wondered at the end of Season 1 whether we would see a new actor fill the main role of super soldier Takeshi Kovacs in the next season. The inaugural season featured Joel Kinnaman as Kovacs, who hinted at the end of Season 1 that he would be turning in his sleeve.
With Kinnaman moving on to the Amazon Prime original Hanna, Altered Carbon will be getting a new Kovacs in Season 2. Anthony Mackie will play the new Kovacs, along with other newcomers Simone Missick as Trepp, Dina Shihabi as Dig 301, Torben Liebrecht as Colonel Carrera, and James Saito as Tanaseda Hideki.
Despite the exodus of many of the characters from Season 1, two will be returning: Renee Elise Goldsberry as Quellcrist Falconer—Kovacs’s mentor and love interest—and Chris Conner as Poe.
Poe, an AI who owned the home-base Raven Hotel, was one of the highlights of the first season. He provided some comedy relief with his witty remarks and made for a great sidekick.
With so many shows having been released in the past year, I admit I almost forgot about Altered Carbon. But now I’m ready to dive back in to this crazy futuristic world. I’m interested in how the new season will differ from the first. Will there be another mystery for Kovacs to solve? Will there be more flashbacks? Will we see a return of Kovacs’ sister Reileen? (Even though we saw her “die” in Season 1, this show always presents the possibility of people being brought back to life at some point.) This new season could go in many different directions.
Although Netflix says Season 2 is now in production, a release date hasn’t been set yet.
