Hello everyone. I’m William Johnson. And I’m a Marvel-holic. (Hello William) Just ask the writers here at 25 Years Later. I can’t really have a discussion with them on our Slack page without inserting a Tony Stark gif or a picture of Cap saying “I could do this all day”. I have a tattoo of Ant-Man on my leg. Ant-Man people! The love runs deep. Just look at my Instagram. It’s…intense.
So when the new Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer popped up, I was chomping at the bit to inflict more Marvel goodness on my fellow colleagues (a true no-prize for them!) by writing about it! I’ve already snuck in a Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Top 10 list and a short review of Captain Marvel, not to mention a pretty Marvel heavy superhero quiz. I’m slowly taking over this site! As horror editor Val Thompson told me recently, soon this website might just be Marvel Studio’s 25 Years Later. Excelsior!
But while I’ll let many of you dread the coming superhero apocalypse, some of you might want to check this awesome trailer out! Ironically introduced with a spoiler warning from known spoiler machine Tom Holland (Spider-Man/Peter Parker himself), this new trailer delves deep into the consequences of Avengers: Endgame’s world-changing conclusion which, if you were one of the six people who didn’t see it in the last two weeks, revolved around quantum gooblygook and time travel shenanigans.
All the possibilities for drama, fan service, and insane plot mechanics seems to be guaranteed in this new trailer. Lots of Iron Man memorials to remind Peter of his lost father figure? Check. Strange awkwardness around girls that Thanos’ snap didn’t eradicate from the boy-Spider? Check. A Marvel movie with Sam Jackson in it? Duh-Check. A multi-verse??? Super check. And also whaaaaa?
Spider-Man is becoming the king (or sometimes queen) of alternate realities. We already had one of the most innovative and mind-bending animated films in cinema history last year, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, produced by Sony (and not related to the MCU). In that movie, we were introduced to multiple Spider-Men (and Women) who come from different timelines and universes to work together. It seems like that concept is creeping in here after the Avenger’s time traveling in Endgame opened up alternate realities with different outcomes.
True believers won’t be fooled by Jake Gyllenhaal’s “friendly” appearance here as Mysterio. In the comics, he is a known villain of Spider-Man as well as a founding member of the Sinister Six, of which two members were already introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming (Michael Keaton’s Vulture and Michael Mando’s Scorpion, for the uninitiated). This playing-friendly act has me questioning if Nick Fury himself is of this universe too. Can’t you tell a dude with a bowl for a head, eyes for shoulder pads, and green energy bolts is bad news Nick?
Anyway, I could go on and on forever on my predictions of what this all means. Don’t worry, I’ll save that for my poor colleagues and not you. But I can’t wait for July 2nd! MCU mega-producer Kevin Feige said that this film is the official closing chapter of Phase 3 of the MCU and the twenty-three film “Infinity Saga”. So not only will we have web-slinging awesomeness this summer, but we might get some additional closure after the emotional roller-coaster ride that was Avengers: Endgame.
