Hideo Kojima’s genius is rarely questioned on the gaming scene. The Metal Gear series is dripping in lore & unique gameplay for its time. Some hail Death Stranding as a masterpiece whilst others hate it and refer to it as a walking simulator. But love or hate Mr Kojima’s work, his games are original and the industry is definitely a better place with their releases.
There’s been a lot of speculation as to what exactly Hideo Kojima’s next game will be. He’s got his own studio these days called Kojima Productions and therefore has creative license to run with whatever project he feels will be right as the next instalment to his portfolio. It’s no secret that the game designer fell out with Konami some time ago. Apparently, Kojima didn’t want to release The Phantom Pain as he wanted to spend more time—and importantly, more of Konami’s money—on the project, which led to him being forced to work alone and ultimately he left the company.
So what next for Kojima? I’ve been digging around the internet and the general consensus seems to be that he’d like to make Silent Hill. Anyone who owned the PS4 in its early years will remember P.T. (or Playable Teaser), the horror game developed by Kojima Productions. It was terrifying, and gamers wanted more. P.T. was a demo, if you like, for the full game which was going to be called Silent Hills. This would star Norman Reedus as the protagonist and be directed by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo Del Toro. The game was cancelled because Mr Kojima left Konami, although he then reunited with Reedus and Del Toro to make Death Stranding.
But Hideo Kojima is on record for saying he wants to make the next Silent Hill. But the issue is that Konami owns the IP. In October, Kojima Productions tweeted that they were looking for staff to work on a new project, which confirms that we’ll definitely be getting a new game but what exactly? A new Metal Gear? Again, Konami owns the IP. Death Stranding 2? People at the Death Stranding subreddit don’t seem to think we’ll see a sequel for a long time. So we’re back to Silent Hill, and the speculation on this seems to grow day-by-day.
There’s been a rumour doing the rounds for a while now that Sony Entertainment is prepared to buy the rights to Silent Hill and employ Kojima Productions to make the new game. And Hideo’s clamour to make a psychological horror game means that many are putting two and two together and reaching the same outcome—a new Silent Hill exclusive to PS5. Check out Chorizo Machine‘s video here for more speculation.
So what do you think? Will we ever see Silent Hill on the PS5? Is this what Hideo’s next project will be or do you think he’ll simply bring us a Death Standing sequel, or maybe a brand new IP?
