Mortal Kombat Trailer is Everything Fans Could Want

One of the greatest accomplishments of my childhood was beating the original Mortal Kombat on my Sega Genesis. I adored that game as a kid (as well as the first two sequels), and even though I’m not much of a gamer anymore, the Mortal Kombat franchise still holds a special place in my heart.

So when I saw the trailer for the new reboot coming in April, it made me feel like I was ten years old again. I enjoyed the original movie from the 1990s back when it came out, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to recognize its flaws more and more. I’ve wanted a better Mortal Kombat movie for a really long time, and it looks like we just might get it.

Sure, I don’t expect this one to win any Oscars or to be a shining example of the fine art of cinema, but if the trailer is any indication, it looks like this new film is going to give us everything that fans of the franchise could want.

For starters, it looks like it’s going to have some incredibly brutal action. I especially like the scene where Sub-Zero cuts Scorpion and then freezes his blood into a knife to stab him again. That’s a really creative way to use his powers, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg. The closing montage of fatalities promises the bloody violence that the first movie failed to give us, and it brought me back to the days when I would put in the “blood code” to unlock all the gory goodness in the original Sega game.

On top of that, Mortal Kombat also promises to have a great cast of characters. Everybody in this trailer looks amazing, and other than the puzzling omission of Johnny Cage (but hey, no movie is perfect), it has all of the essential players from the original game along with a few from the sequels as well.

In particular, I’m really excited for Sub-Zero and Scorpion. They were always my favorite characters to play with, so I can’t wait to see them in all their savage glory. I’m also pretty intrigued by the all-too-brief shot we get of Goro. He’s one of the most iconic characters in the franchise, so I’m guessing they have some cool stuff planned for him but they just didn’t want to spoil it.

All in all, this is probably my favorite trailer of the year so far. It has the violent action and awesome characters Mortal Kombat is known for, so even though this was already one of my most anticipated movies of 2021, my excitement for it has gone through the roof. It comes out in theaters and on HBO Max on April 16, and you can bet I’ll be first in line to see it on opening night.
