The Green Knight Trailer Promises an Intriguing New Take on Arthurian Mythology

I don’t remember the first time I heard about The Green Knight. It feels like 100 years ago, but I’m pretty sure that’s not quite right. The world has changed so much in these past twelve months that it’s tough to keep track of time. But amid all that change, there’s one thing that’s actually stayed almost entirely the same: the list of new movies I’m looking forward to.

Since just about everything scheduled to come out last year got pushed back into this year or next, my “most anticipated” list didn’t change much from 2020 to 2021. I’m still waiting to see the same movies I thought I’d see a year ago, and one of those holdovers is The Green Knight. It’s an Arthurian fantasy about one of the knights of King Arthur’s round table, Sir Gawain, who goes on a quest to find a creature called the Green Knight. Along the way, he contends with ghosts, monsters, and scoundrels, and he has to prove his worth to both his family and his kingdom.

If all we knew about this movie was the plot synopsis, I’d already be on board. I’m a huge fan of medieval-type fantasy stories in any medium. I love films like The Lord of the Rings and Willow, and I voraciously read epic fantasy novels like the The Sword of Truth and The Legend of Drizzt series, so I’m always up for something new in this genre.

But that’s not all we know about it. We also have a trailer, and from the looks of it, this is going to be a fantasy film like no other. The Green Knight comes to us from A24, the studio behind atmospheric, slow-burn films like The Witch and Saint Maud, and while this isn’t exactly a horror movie, it looks like it’s going to fall very much in line with that style.

The trailer is dripping with an atmosphere that’s equal parts unsettling and enthralling, and it showcases a bunch of strange yet fascinating imagery that ups the intrigue even more. Just about everything in it raises a million questions, and I need answers right now. For example, why did Sir Gawain’s head burst into flames in the opening shot, what’s up with that super creepy puppet show, and just who or what is the mysterious Green Knight?

I could go on and on about pretty much every frame of this trailer, but you get the picture. This isn’t your granddaddy’s King Arthur story. No, The Green Knight promises to be a completely new take on that world and its characters, and I for one absolutely cannot wait to see it.

The Green Knight is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 30, so let’s hope it keeps that release date and we can finally see this movie.

So what do you think of the trailer for The Green Knight? Do you agree with JP that it looks like an intriguing new take on Arthurian mythology? Let us know in the comments! And if you’re looking for horror trailers we’ve got you covered!
