America: The Motion Picture Trailer is Hilariously Ridiculous

Do you think you know American history? Do you think you know how and why the United States was founded? Well, I’ve got some news for you. The trailer for America: The Motion Picture is here, and it wants to tell you that everything you think you know about the birth of this country is dead wrong. Here’s the official plot synopsis:

For, like, thousands of years, the origins of the United States of America have remained shrouded in mystery, lost to the sands of time. Who built this ‘country tis of thee,’ and why? Only the dinosaurs know… until now. For the first time in human history, the incredible, completely true story of America’s origins are revealed in America: The Motion Picture — a once-in-a-lifetime cultural event available the only way the Founding Fathers ever intended their story be told: On Netflix, on your phone, June 30th. Starring America’s sweethearts Channing Tatum, Jason Mantzoukas, Olivia Munn, Judy Greer, Bobby Moynihan, Raoul Max Trujillo, Killer Mike, Andy Samberg, Will Forte & Simon Pegg.

I’m a huge fan of satires and spoofs, and the trailer for America: The Motion Picture has just about all the historically inaccurate nonsense I could ever want in a movie. For example, it features a very foul-mouthed George Washington with Wolverine-like chainsaws coming out of his arms, a bunch of really anachronistic technology like electric guitars and sci-fi stuff that hasn’t even been invented yet, and insane characters like Paul Bunyan and a Robocop-esque Paul Revere. It’s absolutely hilarious, and it gets funnier every time I watch it.

On top of all the laughs, I also get the feeling that this film is going to have something very real to say. At first glance, it’s easy to think that this will just be a jingoistic celebration of American supremacy over the rest of the world, but I suspect it’s actually going to be the exact opposite of that. To me, it looks like the whole point of America: The Motion Picture is to poke fun at that attitude and show how ridiculous it really is, and the trailer even hints that the movie might address some of the darker parts of our history.

In particular, there’s a shot where an African American man chides George Washington for wanting him to play lookout for a bunch of white guys, and Washington realizes just how problematic that could be. Sure, the film might end up just playing this for laughs and ignoring the very real issue it reflects, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it instead uses this scene and others like it to remind us that America is and has always been a mix of very good and very bad.

Admittedly, it’s going to be tough for America: The Motion Picture to live up to these high expectations, but if it’s even close to what the trailer promises, it will not disappoint. Thankfully, the movie hits Netflix on June 30, so we won’t have to wait long to find out.
