It’s finally here. After months of waiting, we finally got our first trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it’s glorious. It shows us some things we wanted to see, it clarifies a few plot points we weren’t too sure about, and it wisely holds back on some things that may or may not actually be in the movie.
Let’s start with what this trailer does show us. We already knew that Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Jamie Foxx’s Electro were going to be in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but now we can confidently say that Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin will be in there as well. We don’t actually see him like we do Doc Ock, but when his pumpkin bomb rolls down the street and we hear his evil laugh, the implication is pretty hard to miss.
On top of that, this trailer also shows us some of Spidey’s interactions with Doctor Strange, and it finally tells us just how he’s going to factor into the story. We knew it would have something to do with the multiverse, but now we know that Strange doesn’t just show up to help fix the problem. He’s actually the cause of it. When one of his spells goes awry, that apparently cracks open the multiverse and wreaks some serious havoc for Spider-Man.
Interestingly, it looks like there might even be more than one version of Doctor Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home. There are a few times in the trailer when it seems like he and Spider-Man might be fighting, but it’s not entirely clear. For example, in that scene on the train, it appears that Strange is trying to encase Spidey in some sort of prison made of train cars, and he’s dressed differently than he normally is. We don’t see enough to know for sure, but the hints are pretty intriguing.
And last but not least, I’m sure I’m not the only one who was hoping we’d get some confirmation that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield are in this movie, but alas, we didn’t see them. However, this trailer actually gave me more reason to think they just might be part of the story after all. Green Goblin and Doc Ock gave Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man a ton of trouble back in the day, so I have a hard time imagining that Tom Holland’s version could defeat the two of them combined plus Electro.
Sure, he’ll probably be able to team up with Doctor Strange, but if I’m right about an evil version of the sorcerer supreme, then the good guys are going to need a bit of backup. And with Maguire’s and Garfield’s villains returning, it’s only natural that their versions of Spider-Man would be that backup.
But even if I’m wrong about that, Spider-Man: No Way Home still looks like a real cinematic treat. It comes out exclusively in theaters on December 17, and if this trailer is any indication, it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
