When I first heard that Netflix was making a prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, I was thrilled. Army of the Dead is one of my favorite movies of 2021, so I couldn’t wait to return to the wonderful world it created. But when I heard the prequel wouldn’t be a horror film, my enthusiasm plummeted. Why would they make it an entirely different genre? That didn’t make any sense to me, so the whole thing pretty much fell off my radar. But then I saw the trailer for the film, titled Army of Thieves, and everything changed. Here’s what the movie is going to be about:
In this prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, small-town bank teller Dieter gets drawn into the adventure of a lifetime when a mysterious woman recruits him to join a crew of Interpol’s most wanted criminals, attempting to heist a sequence of legendary, impossible-to-crack safes across Europe.
So why did this trailer change my mind about Army of Thieves? Well, there are a few reasons. For starters, Dieter was one of my favorite characters in Army of the Dead, and while I knew the prequel was going to focus on him, I didn’t realize how much I loved that idea until I actually saw him on screen again. It reminded me of just how funny and endearing this character is, so I can’t wait to see an entire movie about him.
Secondly, even though Army of Thieves isn’t going to be a horror film, it looks like it won’t be completely devoid of zombies. Towards the beginning of the trailer, we see Dieter watching a news story about the zombie outbreak, and that makes me think the film will actually be a bit more horrific than we’ve been led to believe. I don’t know how big of a role the undead will play in this story, but the fact that they’re in it at all is enough to significantly amp up my excitement.
Finally, this trailer has a lighthearted, slightly meta feel that strikes just the right balance between super serious drama and straight up spoof. While it has plenty of suspense and hard-hitting action, it also has scenes like the one where Dieter asks if the operation is “like in a movie film.” It looks like the best of both worlds, and I’m all for it.
For all these reasons, I’m super excited to watch Army of Thieves, and thankfully, the film is almost here. It hits Netflix worldwide on October 29, so we only have to wait about four weeks to find out if it lives up to its thrilling trailer.
