Anybody who knows my taste in movies is sure to be surprised by this pick for trailer of the week. I’ve never been a fan of Shakespeare, so The Tragedy of Macbeth is pretty much the last movie anybody would expect me to be interested in. But I have to say, the trailer is just so damn intriguing that I can’t get it out of my head. Admittedly, at first glance it may not seem like it really tells us anything about the film, but I think there’s more to it than meets the eye.
The trailer for The Tragedy of Macbeth focuses on the atmosphere and the tone of the movie to the exclusion of pretty much everything else, and for my money, that’s exactly what it should do. The story of Macbeth is no secret, so the marketing doesn’t need to recap the plot for us. Even if you don’t know what it’s about, you can easily look it up online and learn everything you need to know about it.
So instead of emphasizing the plot, the trailer for this new adaptation tells us what sets it apart from every other version of the classic Shakespearian tale, and since the film comes to us from A24, what makes it unique isn’t surprising at all. Like many of the studio’s other recent gems, The Tragedy of Macbeth looks like it’s going to have a creepy, horror-esque atmosphere that’s going to slowly worm its way under your skin, and as a huge horror fan, I couldn’t be more excited for it.
Granted, horror isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when most people think of Shakespeare, but if you know this particular story, it shouldn’t be all that surprising. Macbeth has plenty of genre elements, like witches, ghosts, and brutal murders, so at the very least, I suspect that The Tragedy of Macbeth is going to be a lot like Saint Maud, Lamb, and The Green Knight. Those movies are mainly dramas with just enough horror to appeal to genre fans like me, and that’s the vibe I’m getting from this trailer.
But as always, we won’t know for sure how horrific The Tragedy of Macbeth is until we finally see it, and thankfully, we don’t have to wait too long. The film hits theaters on December 25, and it will start streaming on Apple TV+ on January 14.
