Looking Back at the Chernobyl Pilot

In May of 2019, HBO aired a five part mini series that truly was unlike anything else on television at the time. Chernobyl was brutal to watch. It was captivating. It was angering. It really ran a full gauntlet of emotions, which given the subject matter, makes a lot of sense I suppose.

When Chernobyl aired, tensions between the US and Russia were higher than they had been in many years, which somehow made this mini series even more gripping. Even more terrifying and made you wonder if something like this could happen again. Could it?

Audiences, myself included, couldn’t turn their eyes away from this based on a true story mini series. From the top notch cast to the social relevance and panic induced, Chernobyl had many of us questioning conflicts with Russia and nuclear accidents, although a global pandemic would be the real danger hiding behind the corner.

Maybe one day I’ll go back and write more on this series. It certainly warrants more conversation. I’m still proud of this piece a few years later. It’s published on TV Obsessive (along with other great content on the mini series). You can read the piece in full at this link here.
