Superstar Stats: Roman Reigns at WrestleMania

With the main event of WrestleMania XL looming in the near-distance, we recently took at look at Cody Rhodes’s WrestleMania stats and found him wanting a little. It wasn’t an awful record, and Cody has since grown into a star since a lot of those matches have taken place, but it doesn’t give one a lot of hope for Cody’s chances against his opponent at WrestleMania XL: Roman Reigns.

‘The Tribal Chief’ has long been acknowledged as a legit main event superstar for WWE, and that status has long been reflected in his appearences at WrestleMania. In the interests of comparison, we thought it fair to review Roman’s WrestleMania stats and see how he shapes up against Cody Rhodes’s record.

Let’s acknowledge the stats!

The (Acknowledged) Stats

  • Roman Reigns has appeared and wrestled at 10 different WrestleManias. His appearance at WrestleMania XL will make for 11 appearances at the event and (as he is pulling double duty at the event) 12 matches wrestled. This is over a quarter of the total WrestleManias that have taken place.
  • Roman has appeared at WrestleMania (to date) in two six-man tag matches, seven singles encounters and one Triple Threat match.
  • Roman made his WrestleMania debut at WrestleMania 29, appearing in a six-man tag with Dean Ambrose (now Jon Moxley) and Seth Rollins as The Shield. They faced Randy Orton, Sheamus & The Big Show.

Roman Reigns and The Shield confer at ringside at WrestleMania 29

  • Out of all subsequent WrestleManias post-WrestleMania 29Roman Reigns has only missed one WrestleMania, having missed WrestleMania 36 due to concerns over his health (this being the first pandemic-era WrestleMania). Otherwise, Roman has appeared at all other WrestleManias from 29 to 39.
  • Only two of Roman Reigns’s WrestleMania matches were as part of The Shield, the first already mentioned above at WrestleMania 29, and the second a year later when The Shield beat The New Age Outlaws & Kane at WrestleMania XXX.
  • 7 out of Roman’s 10 WrestleMania matches were main event bouts. The Shield were in the opening bout of the main show for WrestleMania 29 and were in the second bout at WrestleMania XXX. The only other Roman Reigns match not to main event a WrestleMania was against Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 35, where they were placed eight on the twelve-match main card.

Roman Reigns has his arm raised at WrestleMania 35

  • Roman Reigns has an 8-2 win-loss record to date at WrestleMania.
  • Roman’s has been victorious against Randy Orton, Sheamus & The Big Show; The New Age Outlaws & Kane; Triple H; The Undertaker; Drew McIntyre; Edge & Daniel Bryan; Brock Lesnar; and Cody Rhodes.
  • Both of Roman’s WrestleMania losses were to Brock Lesnar. Roman is 1-2 to Lesnar at ‘Mania, having finally beaten ‘The Beast’ in their last ‘Mania encounter at WrestleMania 38.
  • Brock Lesnar is the only opponent Roman Reigns has faced more than once at WrestleMania. At WrestleMania XL, Cody Rhodes will be the second.
  • Reigns-Lesnar is the only other WrestleMania pairing to tie with both The Rock-Steve Austin and Triple H-The Undertaker for the most amount of matches against each other at WrestleMania, with a total of three matches for both pairings.

Brock Lesnar has Roman Reigns trapped in an armbar at WrestleMania 38

  • In Roman’s six singles victories at WrestleMania, each match was won by pinfall. Of the two Shield matches, both were won by pinfall, but it was Ambrose and Rollins respectively that got the pins, not Roman Reigns.
  • In his two WrestleMania losses, Roman was pinned each time.
  • Roman Reigns has taken place in six title matches at WrestleMania; two for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship (‘Mania 31 32); two for the WWE Universal Championship (‘Mania 34 37); and two, at ‘Manias 38 & 39 for the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship (the first of which crowned the first Undisputed Universal Champion, was Reigns’s last ‘Mania match against Brock Lesnar but his first ‘Mania win against ‘The Beast’.

Roman Reigns covers both Daniel Bryan and Edge at the same time at WrestleMania 37

  • Roman has only taken part in two gimmick matches at WrestleMania; the first againt The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 against The Undertaker; and a Triple Threat match agains t Edge and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37. He won both matches (you can argue that the Lesnar-Reigns match at WrestleMania 31 became a Triple Threat when Seth Rollins cashed in his ‘Money In The Bank’ briefcase; however, as the match was originally booked as a single match, and was wrestled as such for the majority, I consider it a singles match still for stats purposes).
  • WrestleMania XL will be the first time Roman Reigns has pulled double duty at a WrestleMania, tagging with The Rock against Cody Rhodes & Seth Rollins on night one, then facing Cody in singles action in night two.

An decorated, illustrious history for Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, then. While he has taken losses, his win-loss record at WrestleMania speaks for itself. He has proven himself at the event as a true main eventer and usually successful in title bouts. Brock Lesnar was his achilee’s heel, with Roman losing twice to ‘The Beast’, both times in title matches, but finally finding victory as third time was the charm.

The thought occurs: could Cody be the reverse Lesnar? Roman beat Cody the first time—will he be able to do so the second? At WrrestleMania XL, while the stats are in Roman’s favour, will lightening really be able to strike twice?

We haven’t got to wait long now to find out…
