Rebel Moon 3 was canceled.
You likely have seen this claim across the internet recently, reported by Forbes, many believed the claim at face value. When I looked into this claim, I followed the sources in the Forbes article and found the first claim all sources referred to was a fan-run Twitter account that is not connected to Netflix. As of 2025, Netflix has not announced any cancellations and won’t, due to what I am about to explain.
So why have we not seen Rebel Moon 3? Was it cancelled? Let’s take a look and find out the real reason the third film has yet to arrive.
Why Has Rebel Moon 3 Not Been Made?
When Netflix released Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire in December 2023, followed by Part Two: The Scargiver in April 2024, fans immediately began speculating about a third installment. After all, Zack Snyder is known for his epic, sprawling narratives and extended director’s cuts. But here’s the reality check: Rebel Moon 3 was never officially planned, pitched, or greenlit.
The confusion is understandable. Snyder’s deal with Netflix was specifically for two films and two director’s cuts nothing more, nothing less. The streaming giant committed to exactly what was delivered: a two-part epic with extended versions for each installment. This wasn’t a situation where plans changed, or a third film got cancelled; the contract simply never included one.
Snyder did create a “Universe Bible” a comprehensive guide outlining the Rebel Moon world. Its lore, and potential storylines for future films. This kind of world-building document is common in franchise filmmaking, providing a roadmap if the property proves successful enough to warrant expansion, if the filmmakers want to explore more or just for fun. However, a universe bible is not the same as an official greenlit project. It’s a contingency plan, not a commitment. As of 2025, Zack Snyder has said he has yet to pitch a Rebel Moon 3 to Netflix.
And the films were certainly successful; the Rebel Moon movies collectively earned an impressive 221.6 million views across all four versions as of mid-2024. Proving that audiences were hungry for Snyder’s brand of sci-fi spectacle. By Netflix’s metrics, the franchise was an overall success, demonstrating both Zack Snyder’s continued drawing power and the platform’s ability to deliver big-budget genre entertainment.
Zack Snyder Has Said Why He Has Not Made Rebel Moon 3
What makes the lack of a third film even more logical is Snyder’s own candid admission: he’s exhausted. Creating four Rebel Moon movies, two theatrical cuts plus two extended director’s cuts, took a significant toll. The director has publicly stated he wants to step back from massive productions and focus on smaller, more intimate projects for the foreseeable future.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise. Rebel Moon represented an enormous creative undertaking, blending science fiction, fantasy, and war epic genres into a visually dense universe. The extended cuts alone added substantial runtime and additional footage. Including alternate scenes requiring extensive post-production work. After such an intensive creative sprint, Snyder’s desire to downshift makes perfect artistic and personal sense.
He has said that after his commitment to his current films is up, he may or may not revisit Rebel Moon.
For fans hoping for more Rebel Moon content, the universe bible keeps the door open for future exploration, whether through different creative teams, spin-offs, or perhaps a return from Zack Snyder himself after some well-deserved rest. But for now, the Rebel Moon saga stands at two films, each with its extended counterpart, and that’s exactly where Snyder wants to leave it.
